The Sugar Consumption Connection: to Diabetes, to Cancer and to the Kidneys and Fluoridated Water Complications.

Background:  Sometime before 2003 I started my search for a better, healthier diet.  I believe the Bible is true and it was my starting point to find  something like Daniel's diet, "pulse" (Daniel 1:12 & 1:16 KJV) .  About 2003 I started this page to chronicle my research results.   The History of Sugar Consumption surprised me at the deficiency of our Food & Drug Administration.  Later the healthy diet drifted toward eliminating junk food which became known as processed foods like: margarine and chips and "foods" with large amounts of added sugars (high fructose corn syrup, etc, etc.) which did not add any nutritional value but rather, excessive carbohydrates.  Eliminate those snacks that never satisfy.  They are manufactured for that purpose.  Sugar Articles I & II below with additional history of  food science and government irresponsibilities (2007?) were included.  About 2011? the local city government started adding the EPA's hazardous waste material Fluoride to the drinking water; so, Fluoride references were added because of its suspicious connections to a multitude of diseases.   About that time the word inflammation was used to describe the underlying cause of some or most of the serious chronic diseases.  So the object was to get as much of the inflammation causing products out of the diet.  Additional things besides sugar and carbohydrates like: Fluoride, other hazardous wastes, poisons and pesticides as much as reasonably possible out of the diet.  This required rather large(costly) laboratory blood analyzes.  Later diet changes under consideration included a short list of links to GMO i.e. Genetically Modified Organisms and products with excessive amounts of hormones and antibacterial medications that are added to meat products.  Healthful topics recently reported by Lori Johnson on CBN.com are: Microbiome i.e good gut bacteria probiotics that strengthens your immune system, Epigenetics, Essential Oils and other beneficial natural plants and products.  Although all of this is good information the practical application has to include compromises.  If you can believe the truth and have patience for your taste buds and body to adjust to the new diet you will not want to go back.  If you bust Daniel's Diet for 2-4 weeks say for a broken refrigerator where a lot of  fast food is consumed, it will take 1-3 weeks to reestablish your diet, taste buds, gut bacteria and it's health benefits.

History of Sugar Consumption:   I read an article that sugar consumption per person in the UK in the 1600's was about 7 lbs./yr. (world wide sugar shortage) and that by the 1850's in the USA it was about 52 lbs/yr and that in the USA today (2003) it is some where around 150 lbs/yr.  In other words: 
1600's =   7 lb/52 wk = 0.135 lb/wk; = 17.46 tsp/wk; =  2.50 tsp/day
1850's =  52 lb/52wk = 1.0 lb/wk.;  = 129.7 tsp/wk ; = 18.53 tsp/day
2003  = 150 lb/52wk = 3.0 lb/wk. ; = 389.1 tsp/wk ; =  55.59 tsp/day!  [ 0.43 lb/day!]

  so 1 lb. of sugar contains approximately:
  454 g/lb x 1 cc x 1 mL x 1 tsp = 129.71 tsp
                 0.7 g    1 cc    5 mL               

  where:  1 tsp = 5ml ; 1 cc = 1 ml ; 1 tsp = 5 cc

  or  1 tsp of granulated sugar = 3.5 g.

 Diabetes1958-1994.jpg [CLICK TO ENLARGE.]         The 12 oz. can of soda (Pepsi) I looked at today had 41 g. of sugar which is roughly equivalent to:  41/3.5 = 11.7 tsp of granulated sugar!  A lot of fruit punch drinks are the same!  What we need is to have our thirst quenched without sugar added; but, water gets old quick.  Why not fill up a pint glass with 75% water and 25% real orange juice or any other real juice or a slice of lemon.  The water is what we need.  The juice adds just enough taste to mask the boring taste of the water.
       Concerning the increasing prevalence of diabetes, what I would like to see is a graph of the rising sugar consumption per capita and the rising diabetes malady overlaid on each other.  If I were to guess, I'd guess that they would be very similar except for a time delay of about 20 years.  [If you send something please send an introductory email; otherwise it probably will get ignored.   eMail ]

Be smart, be healthy, watch your habits, make good ones & break bad ones.  Perhaps more importantly we should watch our consumption habits not only what we eat but what we do.   If you aren't taking in God's word you are starving yourself spiritually.   BTW if you are having problems with your child being hyper  and unable to focus, you might try these two mild diet changes before giving him Ritalin, which is a Class III drug - in the same federal drug category as cocaine!     1.) Reduce his sugar intake to 18 tsp/day (63 g/day), or less:  and   2.)  Eliminate caffeine, a known stimulant.   3.)  Both of these are in Sodas!  [The underlying assumption for this page regarding sugar is that it is a real food but grossly over used.  However, this is still better than fake sugars like aspartame which is known for its addiction properties and many serious side effects. search side effects ] [also: Search - What Just A Single Diet Soda Does  ]

03/28/15  In order to be more accurate this title should read Kill Glucose, Cure Cancer.  The reason is that the body changes sugar and carbohydrates immediately into glucose.  The key topic in the video is that cancer cells have a genetic defect that they cannot live off of ketone molecules but only glucose molecules; therefore, reduce glucose for a period of time and wipe out cancer.  Note:  Because some cancers take 20 years to grow you probably will not need to be on a very low or moderate glucose diet for very long to greatly reduce the threat - check with your doctor.  If you avoid sugar and carbohydrates too long you can develop Ketosis vs. Ketoacidosis: What's the Difference?   But, it only takes one slice of white bread a day to blow out the ketone diet!  Ask your doctor about the Mediterranean Diet.

Scientists: Sugar definitely toxic  Tuesday, October 27, 2015 ;  ( 5:41 min.) (TIME)  Fat was the food villain these past few decades but sugar is quickly muscling in to take its place.  As rates of sugar-related disorders such as diabetes, obesity and heart disease climb, many experts believe that when Americans rid themselves of fat, they simply replaced it with sugar in all its forms.   But proving that the rise of the chronic diseases was actually linked to higher sugar consumption is a challenge. Dr. Robert Lustig, from the department of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, who has made a name for himself publishing books and research addressing the question of sugar's effects on the body, wanted clearer answers. Sugar Consumption 'Off The Charts' Say Health Experts
HHS/USDA Urged to Commission Review of Sugar's Health Impact

WASHINGTON - Citing Americans' sharp increase in sugar consumption, a broad array of health and nutrition experts have asked the federal government to commission a National Academy of Sciences (NAS) study on the health consequences of sugar consumption.  In a letter to the Secretaries of the U.S.  Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S.  Department of Agriculture (USDA), the experts cited medical evidence indicating that diets high in sugar can promote obesity,
kidney stones, osteoporosis, heart disease, and dental caries.

The letter was signed by Dr. George Blackburn of Harvard  Medical School, Dr. Kelly Brownell of Yale University, Dr. Marion  Nestle of New York University, Dr. Walter Willett of the Harvard  School of Public Health, the American Public Health Association,  the American School Health Association, C. Everett Koop's  "Shape Up America!" organization, the Society for Nutrition  Education, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, and 38 other professors and health groups.

According to the USDA, people consuming 2,000 calories a day  should eat no more than about 10 teaspoons of added sugar.  USDA surveys show that the average American is consuming about 20 teaspoons of sugar per day.

"Sugar consumption is off the charts," said Michael F. Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest.  "Added sugars - found largely in junk foods such as soft drinks, cakes, and cookies - squeeze healthier foods out of the diet. That sugar now accounts for 16 percent of the calories consumed by the average American and 20 percent of teenagers' calories."

A government study found that in 1977-78 added sugars provided only 11 percent of the average person's calories.

Soft drinks, which contain about nine teaspoons of sugar per 12-ounce can, are a leading contributor to increased sugar  consumption. The per capita consumption of soda has doubled since 1974.  In their letter, the experts warned that soda pop may be contributing to osteoporosis because many teenage girls and young women drink soda instead of calcium-rich milk.

In 1942, the American Medical Association (AMA) expressed  concern about sweetened carbonated beverages, candy, and  other foods rich in sugar but poor in nutrients.  The AMA urged  that "all practical means be taken to limit consumption" of such  foods. Since 1942, soft-drink consumption has increased about seven-fold (excluding diet soda), and overall sugar consumption has increased by one-third.

"Many Americans will make New Year's resolutions to eat healthier and lose weight. Cutting back on nutrient-poor sugary foods, such as soda, cookies, candies, and pastries, will help people achieve their resolutions," stated Dr. Margo Wootan, senior scientist for CSPI.

The health experts' letter also cited studies showing that most Americans are not eating the recommended levels of fruits and vegetables and that obesity rates in the U.S. have sharply increased.  Twenty years ago, teens consumed almost twice as much milk as soda; today they consume almost twice as much soda as milk.

The experts urged that an NAS study of sugar consumption be conducted to assess the full impact of added sugars on Americans' diet and health.  They said the study should also recommend future policy changes and research.

"With all the focus on fat, we've forgotten about sugar.  It's time to rethink our national infatuation with sweets," concluded Jacobson.

If there are Musts to Avoid for a diabetic, they may well include the following:

ONE: Eliminate Sugar

No one would tell a child with a broken leg to jump off the garage roof.  But perhaps we should not even let children without broken legs jump off the garage roofs.  Dietitians would never recommend that diabetics regularly eat lots of sweets. Yet the vast majority of us over consume sugar to the Nth degree.  Can this not only aggravate diabetes, but actually CAUSE it?  In the case of Type II, it is almost certainly so. And with Type I, the risk is there.  There is no downside to avoiding sugar except, perhaps, for putting your local dentist on unemployment.

Cleave, T. L. The Saccharine Disease (Keats, 1975)

To begin with, this book has nothing to do with the artificial sweetener known as saccharin.  The Saccharine Disease refers to excess sugar consumption as a key cause of chronic disease in our time.  Dr. Cleave, formerly a Surgeon-Captain of the British Royal Navy, wishes us to pronounce it "saccar-RHINE," like the German river.  That we can do.  What we will have a harder time doing is admitting that he is correct in ascribing colitis, peptic ulcer, varicose veins, coronary heart disease, and diabetes to excess intake of simple carbohydrates.  A theory like that one needs a book to explain it and a lifetime of experience as a doctor behind it.  Here are both.

It is party line medicine (and dietetics) that sugar consumption is pretty much connected only with tooth decay and obesity.  Since the 1950's, Dr. Cleave has been a voice in the wilderness, informing doctors of what they do not want to believe and patients of what they do not want to do.  Only the sturdiest readers want to tangle with a book that relentlessly takes them to task one sweet tooth at a time.  References are provided with each chapter, and suggestions for improved diet are compactly set forth in an Appendix. The Saccharine Disease is somewhat dry reading, although this is compensated for by its overwhelming scientific importance.  If there is indeed a root cause of illness, and that cause is our everyday use of sugar, it will take plenty of straight science to convince us to change our ways.  Even then, really innovative science has a way of being kept from the public, not by being disproved, but by being ignored.  If Dr. Cleave has been largely unsuccessful in influencing health policy so far, perhaps you will want to take up the banner after reading this book.

There was a time when the director of the FDA (known then as the Bureau of Chemistry) was willing to state that sugar consumption could indeed cause diabetes. (Wiley, H.  A History of a Crime Against the Food Law, 1929).

TWO: Avoid Milk

It has been shown that milk consumption in childhood contributes to the development of Type-I diabetes. Certain proteins in milk resemble molecules on the beta cells of the pancreas that secrete insulin. In some cases, the immune system makes antibodies to the milk protein that mistakenly attack and destroy the beta cells Even so august an authority on children as the late Dr. Benjamin Spock changed his recommendations in his later years and discouraged giving children milk.
